Unreal City,
I had not thought death had undone so many
What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats
Regarding Gay Marriage
My friend on Facebook re-quoted on of his friends and I believe this has a lot of insight. I do understand that it may be controversial, but I believe people shouldn’t write me off as ignorant, hateful or homophobic for not supporting gay marriage. It’s still something that I have problems fully grasping because, the trust if the matter is, it is not simple.
“Hi friends,
Here is my response to 10 Reasons Against Gay Marriage. If you have not seen this list before, here’s a link.http://imgur.com/gallery/CZHeU
Someone could easily read this list and fallaciously come to the conclusion that, because these arguments against gay marriage are absurd, gay marriage should be legal. I wish to discuss some particular things that the author says and to give real reasons why gay marriage should not be legal.
i’m sorry if this comes across as an angry rant, it’s not meant to be, i’m usually more calm and collected in my arguments. but i think your reasoning here is almost as absurd as the 10 reasons list. and yes I have read Aristotle. You act as though you are so kindly giving gay people the benefit of the doubt that some might simply be misguided in their search for true happiness, rather than mindless pleasure-seekers. I find that to be incredibly condescending. have you ever actually personally known a gay person? if you have, you would know that they are no more likely to blindly seek pleasure in their lives than any straight person. but even then you go on to say that gay individuals who act on their feelings are allowing their appetites to control them rather than their human intellect. So… they are just mindless pleasure-seekers then, according to that logic? I’m just so enraged by that assumption, I don’t quite know what to say. in my eyes, trying to use philosophy in place of religion only reveals further weakness in the argument. How can you declare all gay relationships as “bad”? I don’t believe it was proved at all. you declared that gay sex is physically unnatural. i understand human anatomy. but you can’t say therefore same-sex relationships are bad. because there’s more to relationships than sex. as a catholic girl with a boyfriend who’s waiting until marriage… that should be easily understood. there’s an emotional connection between two people who love each other, that makes them want to be companions for life. and it can occur between two people of the opposite or the same sex. and it should be honored in either case. because they are equally beautiful. and in either case the individuals involved are equally capable of helping each other to reach their full potential as human beings.
you say that afterall, these people are human beings so we must “respect” them, which whether you meant it or not, translates to me as: we can’t be outright mean to them. yet you want to outlaw the possibility of their happiness. Which doesn’t exactly sound like respect. It is clear to me that you do not see them as equals. The way you speak of them as misguided souls, captives of their sexual appetites. it’s simply utterly false. how are homosexual appetites any different from heterosexual ones? are they not equally problematic if one cannot control oneself? and while you may have managed to avoid directly quoting the bible in your argument, you’re still using your own personal biases that you have developed due to your religious beliefs to form the argument.
You say the main reason for making gay marriage illegal is to discourage gay sex. this is really a joke. making gay marriage illegal is not going to do anything at all to discourage gay sex. and if you think that’s the issue you’re fighting (which should not be an issue of public concern to begin with), you’re incorrect. Do you believe that these people are getting married.. so they can have sex? no. they are getting married because they want to make a life-long commitment to each other. because they love each other. just like any straight couple who chooses to get married. sex and marriage are completely separate matters. Can you imagine if heterosexual marriages were made illegal? do you think that people would stop having sex then? absolutely not. it’s simply illogical. what you’re really doing by keeping gay marriage illegal are things like preventing individuals from being allowed to visit their loved ones in the hospital in the case of some tragedy, because they are not legally considered family.
i normally would not, but i felt that i had a responsibility to respond to this. i know that what i have said will make no difference to you. because you are set in your beliefs (and i really do respect that). and that makes this rather frustrating for me. and it probably frustrates you equally that i cannot see it from your point of view. but gay people are just the same as you in every way. they aren’t any less intellectual, they aren’t any more victims of their appetites than you are. Their hopes and dreams are no more shallow or misguided than yours. and to me it’s that simple. we cannot continue to deny this group of people their equal rights.
